Abigail's Mercy - After the Fall
Review by Alison B

Until now Birmingham lads & lass Abigail's Mercy have fallen into the Lacuna Coil/Nightwish pen without much of a fight. Soaring female vocals, sword 'n' sorcery lyrics and corset 'n' cape clad live performances and videos - not to mention the fact they namecheck both the former on their own press release - made them seem quite at home in that increasingly overpopulated niche. Space being tight and competition always fierce from some new bunch of classically trained Scandinavians may, however, have prompted them to cast their net further for fans on this second album, and try on some straight-up metal and hard-rock sounds which, it could be argued, were more suited to Abigail's bare-bones four piece arrangement and unprissy attitude from the outset. That's no criticism of their execution of more lofty musical ideas by the way, merely acknowledgement that sexy little numbers like the groove drive "If Only I", Crucified Barbara style high-speed trash attack "Until My Dying Day" and "Sugarfiend" - a stoner grind with a splash of Zeppelin soul - do look damned good on them. So good heavens, it's a shock when the dirty little rockers you've just been getting to know then morph into an equally credible gothic coven come "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle", where frontwoman Lindsey chants like a Medieval Baebe, magnificently holding her own with only a few flute melodies and atmospheric string-strums for support. If that's her spotlight moment bassist and co-vocalist Stevey gets his in "Summerland", and once again swapping the more stiff symphonic elements for something rawer, even folk-informed, on the Goth spectrum thoroughly agrees. When both voices battle it out over jutting Maiden riffs on "Destiny", offering vocal interplay much like that hallmarked by the criminally underrated Interlock, you sense Abigail's really coming into their own, and becoming comfortable in their own eclectic skin.

Thank you to Alison for this great review

jillie_b7:48pm: A fond farewell
Our dear Abigailians
It is with blackened heart that we inform you that after five years walking the boards with Abigail's Mercy, our rhythm guitarist and founding member, Terry Pitt has decided to hang up his leather trousers and call it a day.
Terry and Ange have worked tirelessly for the band since day one, but have decided to devote more time to other pursuits. We thank them both for the last 5 years and wish them both all the best.
We shall continue as a 4 piece and will commence recording of the new album soon.
Hope to see you at our upcoming shows.
Crushing hugs and bloody kisses
Stevey, John, Linz and Mark xxx

A charity concert to raise money for S.O.P.H.I.E. (Stamp Out Prejudice, Hate & Intolerance Everywhere) a charity set up by the family and friends of the late Sophie Lancaster, to promote tolerance and understanding amongst young people.

On Saturday 11th August 2007 whilst returning home, Sophie and her boyfriend Robert Maltby, a young couple from Lancashire, were savagely and senselessly attacked by a gang of teenagers. The couple, who did nothing to provoke the attack, were both beaten into a coma. Tragically Sophie never regained consciousness and died 2 weeks later, she was 20 years old. Police believe the cause for the attack was the gothic/alternative clothing and appearance of the couple.

All proceeds of the event will go directly to the S.O.P.H.I.E. charity and the event has been approved by Sophie’s parents.

This concert features sets from: Abigail’s Mercy, New Generation Superstars, Deviant U.K., Tin Omen, Reism, Beautiful Deadly Children and Necrotize. Plus a raffle of items donated by other bands and companies...

Any donations of items for the raffle will be gratefully received please email charitygigs.dudley@googlemail.com

The event is on a bank holiday weekend.

Please invite people, it only takes a few seconds and even if it means you help us sel one more ticket that money will help do some good.
